REFLECTIONS

When the semester started, I knew CIS 2336 was going to be one of my favorite classes. I have always been interested in web development and having the opportunity to learn more about it was amazing. If anything, it cements my decision to develop my coding abilities and pursue a career in UX Design. At the start of the semester, I had knowledge of HTML and CSS. Now, I am leaving with basic skills in HTML/CSS, PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript.

Throughout the semester, I noticed I did better when there were examples available. Seeing an expert explain the steps involved and why they are doing it in that particular way was beyond helpful. Codecademy was also a very valuable source. The website practically had everything I wanted. It included a simple explanation of the material, instructions with hints, and they would not let you move on until you understood the material. The last one was beneficial because at times, I get frustrated and pretend I know the subject and move on. However, Codecademy was different. For some languages such as JavaScript, however, I felt it was a bit lacking but I cannot imagine fitting so much information in a simple tutorial.

If more time was available, I would like to expand on JavaScript. For being one of the top three languages regarding web development, I think we should have focused on it more. At the moment, I do not feel I have a full grasp on the language so more practicing time with the professor would have helped. Although we did spend a good amount of time on this, I think going over database connections again would clear up any lingering questions that I have.

At the beginning of the semester, I was not sure how to design my website. Since I had procrastinated, I did not have the time to make it visually appealing and efficient. I tried my best but if I had the time, I would fix my assignment portfolio entirely so it can be more effective.

I am excited to work on my newfound skills this summer so I can be more confident when applying for internships. When speaking to other people, it feels great to say that I have made my own website for class. I am proud of the work that I have done this semester. If I keep working on these languages, I know I will be able to go far. One of short-term goals is to create a website for my family business. It will be a good project to invest myself in and practice. I would like to thank Professor Crowley for guiding us this semester. Congratulations on your retirement!
